We like crafts at our house, so yesterday my son and I made a little cushion out of an old shirt. It was very easy and the end result was better than I expected. I am not really the sewing type and I wouldn’t know the first thing about handling a sewing machine, but I can manage the basics of hand stitching although the stitches could not be defined as fine craftsmanship I think I did pretty well.

After deciding we were going to make a fish shaped cushion, we drew the pattern directly on the fabric and cut the shape. Then I hand stitched all around it leaving a gap to insert the stuffing for which we used old socks and the remaining shirt’s fabric.

Once satisfied with the amount of stuffing, I completed the stitching and Luca decorated the cushion with fabric art markers. It only took a little over an hour and it’d probably be much quicker to use a sewing machine, but it was fun to make something together out of old stuff and to come up with a special new cushion.

I have mentioned before how taken my son is with the large art attacks by Neil Buchanan, the creator of the TV show Art Attack, so he didn’t miss this opportunity to create his own marine environment with the brand new fish, which he laid on my blue yoga mat and for which he added a friend: an octopus made with a Barbapapa balloon and markers as tentacles; the buttons lined up from the fish make up the water bubbles.
