portugal_1Lisbon is such a great place to visit, a city that sprouts Portuguese history from every corner. The architecture is so rich that even if you didn’t visit any museums at all you’d still go away with the sensation you have seen a lot of art. Every street and every corner have something interesting. Even the pavements are a work of art with the famous tiny limestone tiles put together with the most amazing patterned compositions of traditional and modern designs.

lisbon-mosaicsI loved the blue tile mosaics called Azulejos, which are characteristic of Portugal. These wonderful mosaics often portray scenes of Portuguese history and are absolutely everywhere as they were used to decorate anything from churches and monasteries, to palaces and ordinary houses, railway stations, fountains and park seats. Lisbon is one of those cities where every corner you turn fills you with anticipation for the awesome sights you may find. This is particularly true of the old districts, which are scattered with surprising belvedere terraces with breathtaking views over the city and the River Tagus.

cable-car-lisbonLisbon is wonderful to visit with kids (see my previous post about Lisbon with kids) and like in all Latin Countries children are welcome everywhere day and evening according to parents’ discretion. One thing about Lisbon to remember when you travel with kids is that walking up and down the steep streets can get too much for little legs so careful planning is really important and when the walking gets too much the lifts and the cable car system become a life saver.
