I have the fortune to live in a place where children activities are plentiful and inexpensive. Last year we discovered a playgroup workshop style called Bibliomela, an Italian made up word from the word Biblioteca (library) and mela (apple). Basically the playgroup takes place in a library and the activities are directed towards inspiring children’s creativity by exploring the natural environment and through the expression of their ideas hands on. Their snacks are also very healthy, focusing on fruit and vegetables. Activities cover a very broad topic range and are run by highly qualified teachers. To mention only a few of the many projects, they observed the whole process of caterpillars turning into cocoons and then into beautiful butterflies and experienced the transformation of corn, actually tasting sweet corn and making popcorn. I particularly liked the textile projects they carried through this week, one is the representation of the sea obtained with various layers of fabric on cardboard and the other is an actual old fashion weaving piece obtained with stripes of different coloured fabric interlaced across a grid of string.
