Recycled crafts: comics storage pot

Submitted by on May 5, 2011 – 1:52 amNo Comment

Lately we have developed an addiction for Morello cherry ice cream that comes in particularly sturdy tabs.  As you all know I love to turn junk into useful and pretty things so I started collecting these tabs that are made of plastic rather than the more common paper based container, which make for a fantastic base to work from. I let them pile up until I decided what to do with them and yesterday I started the upcycle process with the first one.  I made a fun storage container for my son’s bedroom covering the outside with strips of old comics to match a decoupage shelf we had made last year. The box also works well as a gift box.

The process is very easy; this is what you need to do:

1. Rip some old comics into irregular shapes

2. Prepare a mix of vinyl glue and water (2/3 glue and 1/3 water)

3. Apply the glue with a brush to the pot and attach the comic strips all around applying more glue over the paper as you go along; leave to dry

4. Finish with water based varnish to seal it
