Christmas crafts: how to make a candle holder with air dry clay

Submitted by on November 18, 2010 – 6:58 amNo Comment

Our first Christmas decoration of the year is a candle holder made out of air dry clay. I am a huge fan of air dry clay and I have used it a lot in the past to make things, it is one of the few materials I buy for our crafts, which are usually made of objects that would otherwise be discarded. Reuse before recycle is an important message I wish to pass on to my son, but occasionally we need to buy materials to make new objects. I normally opt for materials that can go a long way. With a third of a clay brick we have already made a few pieces of our nativity and the candle holder in the photo. To make the candle holder we shaped three holly leaves, two little balls to make the berries and a little pot to hold the candle. We added to its functionality by inserting a small spike in the actual candle holder to keep the candle in place. We allowed for two days to fully dry before painting and an extra day before sealing it with water based varnish.
