Monday crafts: how to turn old puzzle cubes into educational weather blocks

Submitted by on November 8, 2010 – 4:49 am5 Comments

I was so inspired by Red ted Art’s story cubes last week that I just had to make some myself. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any wooden blocks on a short notice so I got my thinking hat on and I came up with an idea to reuse some old Disney story blocks to make my own weather symbols and matching words. They are not as natural looking as I would have liked, but they fit what I believe in very well: reuse before recycle in a creative way.

First I laid two coats of white acrylic paint on all sides and left them to dry. This step requires a lot of patience as you need to do it in stages given the nature of the cubic shape.  On top of that you should let the first coat be fully dry before moving on to the second.

Once the first step was over and my cubes were nice and dry, I drew the weather symbols with a thick black pen suitable for multi surfaces on one of the cubes and the names of the weather condition on another.

I also decorated another two cubes with images in colour and the corresponding name of each image.

To finish the work I sealed them with clear water based varnish.
