Learn Through Play: Times Table App

times-tables

Learning is getting more and more fun every day. Do you remember learning the times table? I have a very unpleasant memory about it, endless repetitions until the numbers were forever registered in my head. It worked but it was hardly a fun experience. This is probably the reason behind my constant search for fun ways to help my son learning his multiplication table in a fun playful way. One thing is for sure with the amount of apps popping out here and everywhere, learning has never been more enjoyable. After the number of spelling and math’s application I have picked recently, I found the Times Table app developed by Magnicode. The app has all necessary ingredients to make learning fun and effective. Not only it is colourful and has a good visual display of the numbers, but it is interactive and it comes with a reward system. As children become confident they will be able to unlock the cups that are only awarded on a perfect score. Yet it is a game so it is free of the pressure kids may be under in the school environment. The Times Table app has three levels: easy, shuffle and hard. On top of that the option to activate the timer will make it more challenging as the score will show the time it took to complete each game. Players have to select the right numeric answer amongst three options on 12 sets of numbers. Another way to play the game is the writing tool, which allows children to write the answer with their finger directly on the screen and then press check to reveal the correct answer. You can download the lite version of this app for free from iTunes. It has all the features of the full version so it is a good testing ground, but it only covers the numbers 1 to 3.

  • Another app to help your child enjoy learning their times tables is ‘Times Table Fun’. I wrote it with a lot of help from my ten year old daughter who also created most of the graphics. It includes a series of games and activities covering times tables from 2 to 10.
