I love crafts and I love books so when I was contacted by Ammo Books for a review of the new crafts book Kid Made Modern by artist Todd Oldham I couldn’t wait to receive it. I knew it was coming from the US so I expected it to take a little while to get here. To my surprise a couple of days later I received a Fedex parcel containing a fabulous book with the most amazing kids’ art projects inside. Firstly I was impressed with the efficiency and the speed in which the book arrived and when I opened the parcel I was immediately drawn to the projects and the way they are presented.

The projects in this book, 52 of them to be precise are all easy to follow with step by step instructions sided with photographs. These are real art projects based on modern design ideas from the 1930s to the 1960s inspired by world renowned artists such as Verner Panton, Gio Ponti and Alexander Girard.

Kid Made Modern is organized very well in the way it is informative about art supplies, it goes into different types of paint and colour mixing, and it looks at art techniques like colour dyes and weaving, the use of different types of tape, paper and everyday objects to create art.

I love that the art projects in the book use a large variety of recycled materials in a very creative way and they cover a wide range of crafts from textiles, furniture decoupage and sewing to handmade books, jewellery making and printing.

The projects are one better than the other and I am sure we’ll tackle them all one by one, but my favourite has to be the funky messenger bag inspired by Verner Panton made only with two recycled post envelopes and duct tape of different colours.

The detailed information on art materials and art techniques in the book are just as stimulating as the craft projects featured inside by encouraging kids to look at everyday objects under a different light and be inspired by them to make art.

Kid Made Modern is the perfect gift for creative kids of all ages who can carry through the projects by themselves or, in the case of younger children, with the help of a parent.

  • Love the book. We’ve just been decorating wooden spoons, but they look nothing like the ones in this book. Nice to have stuff you might actually want to keep (speaking as someone who’s just putting the loo roll angels on the Christmas tree…). Btw, we’ve just added your site to our Who We’re Reading – long overdue!

angelsandurchins – thanks so much! I love this book, in January I will run a series of 4 posts featuring 4 different projects from the book that I will try with my son for my monday crafts.
