Recycled crafts: how to build a toy catamaran

Submitted by on May 31, 2011 – 2:17 pm3 Comments

Our craft this week is a fun construction that actually floats and it’s bound to provide hours of fun in the water on windy days. We made a catamaran with two small plastic bottles, one plastic lid, a wooden stick, garden wire and a plastic bag.

First we attached the plastic lid to the bottles using garden wire. Then we tied the garden wire around the bottles and fed it through the plastic top. We secured the wire by tying a knot.

Once we had a solid base we proceeded to complete the sails. We made a hole in the middle of the plastic lid with the help of a screwdriver where we inserted the wooden pole, which became our catamaran’s mast.

We then cut two sails from a plastic bag – we used a white plastic bag, but anything will do – and we tied the two sails to the mast.
