Thought I would cheer you up, I didn't teach Son of Thor to read/write in English beyond some playing at Starfall.

I wanted to avoid confusion while the Italian phonetic system was being put in place so I didn't push the issue in year 1 and 2 of elementary.

I nearly dropped to the floor when I discovered that he had been reading the English kid books (mostly Ladybird), that I thought were mere decoration on the bookshelf, off his own bat.

Turns out that reading and writing are transferable skills !!
Now he is nine I am actively teaching him and while he is not at peer level the speed at which he is catching up is jaw dropping.

I was so chuffed, saved at least a hundred quid in not having to buy Jolly Phonics.
