I first saw the Space Age Garden kit at the Natural History Museum shop, but I didn’t buy then because I was with my son so I had to make a quick exit before he would start inundating me with requests to buy the little gadgets he likes so much. I then looked it up on the Natural History Museum website in all tranquillity and found you can actually buy it online for £19.57. This educational kit is great to teach children about growing plants watching all the stages in a plant’s life. The kit comes with full instructions to get started and includes 3 acrylic containers with space gel, sunflower, tomato and basil seeds, 3 small plant pots, 3 peat pellets and a planting stick. The space gel is a nutrient substance developed in collaboration with NASA scientists to grow basil, tomato and sunflowers in individual gel ecosystems. The little plants are then repotted to grow into mature plants. The educational value of this system is extremely high, not only children learn about plant growth from the very beginning observing the roots (fully visible in the gel) as well as the leaves, but they learn to follow the plant’s development to full size through repotting and further growth taking responsibility for it.
